The 2024 facelift is the biggest single update to the 70 Series in 17 years. This guide covers what changed, what stayed the same, and how the new model drives.

1. The 2.8L 1GD-FTV Engine
The biggest change. The 4.5L V8 turbo-diesel is replaced by Toyota's 2.8L four-cylinder unit (same engine family as Hilux and Prado). 150 kW at 3,400 rpm matches the V8's 151 kW. Peak torque is 500 Nm vs the V8's 430 Nm but produced across a narrower 1,600-2,800 rpm band (V8 was 1,200-3,200 rpm). Real-world feel: less effortless at low rpm, harder pull on boost.
2. New Six-Speed Automatic Option
First factory auto option on the 70 Series. Paired with the 2.8L only. The six-speed manual remains available. The auto is materially better for daily city driving and towing; manual remains the choice for working ute and remote-area use.
3. New GX Trim
The new GX slots between Workmate and GXL. Adds amenities like alloy wheels, cloth seats, basic infotainment improvements over Workmate while staying below GXL's full equipment. Factory diff locks remain a $1,500 option on Workmate and GX; standard on GXL.
4. Refreshed Styling
New LED headlights, new grille and bumper, new tail light design on dual cab. Cabin dash refreshed with a larger infotainment screen, updated instrument cluster and improved climate controls. Most exterior body panels are unchanged.
5. Factory Specifications
GVM remains 3,510 kg (carried over from the September 2022 update). Braked tow 3,500 kg unchanged. GCM 7,010 kg. Wheel mounting (5x150, M14x1.5) unchanged. Door seal geometry unchanged - the Soundproofing Door Seal Kit from 70 Series Store still fits.
6. How It Drives
The auto-equipped 2.8L is significantly more comfortable to drive than the manual V8 was. City traffic and stop-start work is dramatically easier. Highway cruise is similar. Heavy tow on hills works the smaller engine harder but the torque-converter automatic copes well. The character is different - more competent, less charismatic - which polarises long-time V8 owners.
