The struts are rated for the standard bonnet weight. If you run bonnet-mounted recovery tracks, the extra weight may exceed the strut capacity and you may still need the prop rod as backup.

Yes, they're longer than the mounting distance by design, so compress them a little before fitting. If hand pressure isn't enough, loop a small ratchet strap over both end sockets, tighten until it lines up, pop it onto the ball studs and release. The bonnet's weight then keeps it compressed.
