How Your 1VD-FTV Engine Works
Understanding the four-stroke diesel cycle inside the 4.5L V8 turbo-diesel that powers your 70 Series Land Cruiser.
AIR IN
01 · Intake
Intake stroke
The piston descends from top dead centre, creating a pressure drop that draws a full charge of fresh air into the cylinder through the two open intake valves. Unlike a petrol engine, the 1VD-FTV draws in air only — no fuel yet. The DOHC configuration with 4 valves per cylinder (intake valve diameter: 30.1 mm) maximises airflow into each of the 8 cylinders simultaneously.
Did you know
The intercooler mounted on top of the engine pre-cools the incoming air charge before it reaches the cylinders, increasing air density for a more powerful combustion event.
16.8:1
02 · Compression
Compression stroke
With all valves closed, the piston rises and compresses the incoming air charge to a ratio of 16.8:1 — far higher than any petrol engine. This extreme compression heats the air charge to over 700 °C, preparing it for spontaneous ignition the moment fuel is introduced. Glow plugs between the intake valves assist cold starts by pre-heating the chamber.
Did you know
The 1VD-FTV uses a forged steel crankshaft with 7 counterweights on 5 main journals to manage the immense compression forces generated across all 8 cylinders.
COMBUSTION
03 · Power
Power stroke
At peak compression, the Denso HP4 common rail fuel injector fires diesel fuel at up to 157 MPa (22,750 PSI) through 9 precision holes directly into the superheated air. The fuel ignites instantly on contact, and the resulting combustion forces the piston downward with enormous force — this is where the 1VD-FTV's 650 Nm of torque is generated.
Did you know
Two separate fuel rails — one per cylinder bank — each controlled by a dedicated Electronic Driver Unit (EDU), allow the common rail system to precisely manage injection timing across all 8 cylinders independently.
EXHAUST OUT TURBO
04 · Exhaust
Exhaust stroke
The piston rises again, pushing spent combustion gases out through the two open exhaust valves (diameter: 27.0 mm, duration: 233°). The single Garrett GTA2359V turbocharger harvests energy from these exhaust gases to compress incoming intake air, improving efficiency. The water-cooled EGR system recirculates a portion of exhaust back into the intake to reduce NOx emissions.

The 1VD-FTV's cylinder block is cast from compact graphite iron (CGI) — a material with 75% greater tensile strength than standard cast iron — allowing the block to withstand extreme combustion pressures over a very long service life.
